Blood Flow Restriction

Blood flow restriction training (commonly referred to as BFR or BFRT) is a training tool that involves applying external pressure to a limb to partially restrict blood flow during exercise.  BFR training at Body in Balance uses a computerized cuff (similar to an automated blood pressure cuff) to safely and accurately achieve and the exact desired pressure for each patient.  It can be applied to the upper or lower limbs for a variety of problems.  BFR is extremely beneficial in any case where pain is limiting a person’s ability to do strengthening exercises.  In many cases, BFR training offers the ability to limit weakness and atrophy without overloading healing tissues– often crucial when recovering from surgery or injury.  Reducing blood flow to the limb mimics higher load training without the stress onto the joints, muscles, or tendons.  Simply stated, you get the benefits of higher-intensity exercise while using much lighter load.  Our therapists often utilize BFRT for patients with arthritis, osteoporosis, or who have limitations in early stages after surgery.
